First: Applying for study

As an international student, to study at a Canadian university, you must first be accepted in a program of study by a recognized Canadian university. Once you have determined which universities meet your needs, contact the registrar’s office at each institution to obtain an application for a bachelor’s program or a professional degree. If you anticipate pursuing postgraduate studies in Canada you may obtain more information by contacting the dean of graduate studies at the universities that interest you. It is important to apply early.

 Second: Study Permit

Most international students are required to obtain a study permit from Citizenship and Immigration Canada before entering Canada. The study permit must be obtained from a Canadian embassy, high commission, or consulate outside Canada, except in the case of students from the United States or St. Pierre and Miquelon, who may apply for their study permit at the port of entry. Required documentation usually includes a visa, a health certificate, a letter of acceptance from a Canadian institution, a certificate of language proficiency, and financial guarantees. International students must also have a valid passport that guarantees their readmission to their own country or some other country after their stay in Canada.

The study permit is normally valid for the duration of the study period. It indicates that the student must attend only a specified institution, in a specified program. The permit may be extended or revoked, based on the student's satisfactory academic performance and other considerations. The permit also allows full-time international students to work part-time on campus and to apply for renewal from within Canada if they decide to study for a longer period. If the employment is essential to their programs of study, these students may also be eligible for employment off-campus.

International students do not need study permits if they plan to take courses or programs in Canada that last six months or less. However, they must complete the course or program within the period authorized for their stay in Canada.

In Quebec:

Students who plan to study in Quebec must also obtain the Certificat d'acceptation du Québec. Information about the certificate is available from Canadian and Quebec overseas missions and from the Quebec ministère des Relations avec les Citoyens et de l'Immigration.

How to Apply for Admission?

Once you have decided to which universities or colleges you wish to apply to for admission, you should write directly to the institution's Office of Admissions (for undergraduate and college programs) or Office of Graduate Admissions (for graduate programs) and ask for detailed application information and forms. Institutions set their own admission requirements for foreign students and their own policies to assess international credentials. The university will determine the equivalency of your academic credentials. There is no nationwide set of entrance exams. The Office of Admissions will inform you about the documentation, translation, and visa requirements. Please note that the admission application process can take considerable time, and that you should start at least one year in advance to compile the necessary information and documentation.

In some jurisdictions, applications can be submitted electronically.

Irnascience: We strongly recommend you to visit the website of the university /institution of your interest and look for the detailed information and applications of admission by clicking: www.aucc.ca

Language Test

Canada has English language and French language institutions with some universities offering instruction in both official languages. You do not have to speak both English and French to study at a Canadian university – however, you will have to show proficiency in one, depending on the university where you apply. Most institutions in Canada require demonstration of proficiency in their language of instruction (either English or French), usually through the achievement of a certain minimum score in a standardized language test. You should confirm the details of the language requirement with the Office of Admissions of the university or college to which you are applying.

Application Deadlines :

Generally, international students should apply to a Canadian university up to eight months in advance. Some universities have application deadlines as late as June for a September start date. Typical entry points for international students are the September and January semesters. However, many universities have adopted a procedure of "rolling-admissions" which means that they consider international students’ applications as they come in throughout the year. However, for graduate programs in particular, it can take time to ensure you are matched with the right faculty adviser, and you should ensure that you apply early.

You can also contact the university of your choice directly. The majority accept applications via e-mail. Go to the university Web sites.

Services for Foreign Students:

Many universities have sizable foreign student populations. Special services for foreign students, including orientation programs, counselling, and international student clubs, are common. International student populations are relatively small at small and non-urban institutions. However, in large urban centres, the need to serve this population is growing.

Learn More about Canadian universities and colleges, and their programs and admission requirements?

University and college calendars and their  Web sites are the best sources of information about programs offered by specific institutions. These publications usually provide information about entrance requirements, student services, housing, tuition fees and other costs, scholarships, and a variety of other subjects of interest to prospective students. You can obtain calendars by writing directly to the university's or college's Office of Admissions.

Note:

Engineering, optometry, medicine, veterinary medicine, law, and dentistry are fields where the first professional degree is considered an undergraduate program. There is a great deal of academic competition for these spaces and most universities have limits or quotas on the number of qualified applicants admitted each year. A high level of academic achievement is required for admission. Often at least two years of undergraduate study in a related field are required before you can be admitted to the first professional degree program. Check the university calendar to identify tests such as LSAT (law) or DAT (dentistry) that may also be required.
